My wife and I are starting a corporation and we are planning to use and investor for the startup funding. We plan to receive about $100,000 from this investor who is a relative. How many shares of stock should this investor receive in our company?

There are about a thousand things to consider when making this determination. Will you need raise more money in the future? How will the investor get a return on their money - dividends, when the company is sold, when a bigger investor comes in? How much risk is involved? Are you and your wife putting in money as well?

To give you a good idea, I'd need a lot more background about the company and its plans. If this is the money you need to get started (meaning nothing has been done operationally in the business yet), outside of knowing anything else, I'd say you're looking at giving up a 20% ownership stake for that $100k, which would value your company at $400k before the investment and $500k after. That's totally a guess, but at least it's a starting point. With more details I could offer a more grounded opinion.
